How Cartagena, Colombia Stole Our Hearts

Travel Diary from Miami to the Caribbean

Cartagena had been on our list for a while, but nothing truly prepares you for how much this city makes you feel. Colorful, vibrant, soulful, and endlessly romantic – Colombia welcomed us with open arms and completely exceeded every expectation.

From Miami to Cartagena

We started our trip in Miami, which made Cartagena an incredibly easy getaway – just a 2.5-hour flight, surprisingly affordable, and perfect for a long weekend escape.

Of course, our first stop was the American Express Centurion Lounge. Fresh fruits, gourmet hot dishes, and beautifully curated food options made the delay due to Christmas travel much more pleasant. Holiday crowds meant our flight took off about an hour late, but once we were in the air, all frustrations melted away.

As we descended into Cartagena, the views from the plane were absolutely breathtaking – a warm Caribbean glow, colorful rooftops, and the ocean stretching endlessly beyond the city. That first glimpse alone felt magical.

First Impressions & Arrival

Our arrival experience did come with one hiccup: customs and security took several hours, with long lines and little organization. Not the best first impression, especially after a late landing – but thankfully, that moment quickly became a distant memory.

Our hotel arranged airport pickup, and within minutes we were on our way to check-in and officially beginning our Colombian adventure.

Where We Stayed: Hotel Capellán de Getsemaní

For our first two nights, we stayed at Hotel Capellán de Getsemaní, booked through American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts – which turned out to be such a smart move.

Thanks to Amex perks, we enjoyed:

  • $300 hotel credit
  • Room upgrade to a suite
  • Early check-in & late check-out
  • Daily breakfast
  • $100 resort credit

The hotel itself is incredibly charming – especially at night, when it was beautifully decorated for Christmas. Located in the heart of Getsemaní, the neighborhood buzzes with energy, music, art, and life.

We were welcomed with a refreshing fruit drink, and shortly after, informed of our suite upgrade – one of those small luxury moments that instantly sets the tone for a trip.

Dinner at Morena Restaurante

After check-in, we headed straight across the street to Morena Restaurante, and wow – what a first meal.

The restaurant is visually stunning, centered around a striking sculpture honoring women and African heritage. The space feels like a beautiful fusion of African, Mediterranean, and Caribbean influences, and the rotating artistic elements give the restaurant a sense of movement and freshness.

The food is locally sourced, boldly flavored, and beautifully plated. Every dish reflects creativity, care, and cultural pride – but honestly, the real star here is the vibe. Morena instantly became one of our favorite dining experiences in Cartagena, and I’d recommend it without hesitation.

A Magical Christmas Night Walk

After dinner, we wandered through the streets, drawn in by glowing lights and festive decorations. Cartagena during Christmas is something truly special – every plaza sparkles, buildings glow, and the entire city feels alive.

I’ve never seen a city so fully immersed in holiday magic. It was the perfect way to start our trip – romantic, joyful, and unforgettable.

Day Two: Coffee, Color & City Life

The next morning began with breakfast at the hotel: fresh tropical fruits, Colombian coffee (some of the best I’ve ever had), and freshly squeezed juices. I tried lulo juice for the first time – tangy, refreshing, and absolutely delicious.

After breakfast, I explored the neighborhood, stopped by a local grocery store, and couldn’t resist the vibrant fruit stands scattered throughout the streets. Everywhere you look, Cartagena is bursting with color, warmth, and energy.

With temperatures around 90°F, we spent part of the afternoon relaxing by the hotel’s rooftop pool. One of the things I love most about staying in the city center is that you get the best of both worlds – lively streets below, and peaceful rooftop moments above.

Exploring Getsemaní

Getsemaní centers around Plaza de la Trinidad, where locals and travelers gather to drink beer, snack on grilled arepas, and listen to street musicians. The surrounding streets are filled with murals, casual eateries, cocktail bars, and iconic spots like Café Havana, where salsa music keeps the party alive late into the night.

It’s raw, authentic, and full of soul – the heartbeat of Cartagena.

Dinner at Candé: Cartagenera Perfection

For dinner, we visited Candé – Cocina 100% Cartagenera, and it was nothing short of spectacular. From the moment you walk in, the golden interiors and dim lighting set the mood for a romantic, elevated evening.

We enjoyed Tempranillo wine, cocktails, an incredible ceviche selection, and beautifully prepared fresh fish. Live musicians and dancers brought the space to life – making dinner feel more like an experience than a meal.

Late Night: Havana Cigar Bar

After dinner at Candé, we weren’t quite ready to call it a night – so we made our way to one of Cartagena’s famous Havana cigar bars for late-night drinks and cigars.

Dimly lit, intimate, and full of old-world charm, the cigar bar felt like stepping into a different era. Plush seating, smooth Latin music in the background, and the unmistakable aroma of cigars created the perfect atmosphere for winding down the evening. It was relaxed, elegant, and undeniably Caribbean – the kind of place where time slows down and conversations linger.

Sipping cocktails, enjoying a cigar, and soaking in the ambiance felt like the perfect contrast to the lively streets outside. It was one of those spontaneous moments that end up becoming a favorite memory — effortlessly chic and uniquely Cartagena.

Hotel Change: Palmas de Alba Boutique Hotel

For our next stay, we moved to Palmas de Alba Hotel Boutique, just a short distance away. This hotel felt like a hidden oasis – peaceful, elegant, and intimate.

Our room was spacious, beautifully designed, and opened directly onto the courtyard pool with outdoor seating. It truly felt like staying in a private home rather than a hotel.

Rosario Islands Day Tour

We booked a 5-stop Rosario Islands tour via Expedia, starting early in the morning.

Our first stop was Dharma Beach Club – private, secluded, surrounded by nature, with warm turquoise waters and attentive staff. It was the definition of island bliss.

Other stops included:

  • Pablo Escobar’s former house on Isla Grande
  • A remote local island with fresh coconuts and snorkeling
  • A beachside lunch of fresh fish, coconut rice, and plantains
  • A final beach bar stop for swimming, drinks, and relaxation

Despite a bumpy ride back, the day was unforgettable – and surprisingly convenient, with Wi-Fi and credit card payments available even on the islands.

Final Dinner: El Burlador

Our last dinner in Cartagena was at El Burlador – Mediterráneo Caribe, and it completely blew us away. The service was warm and charming, the food exceptional, and the live music (including a singer and saxophone players) elevated the entire experience.

Everything we ordered – ceviche, short ribs, salmon – was perfectly executed. Honestly, I’m shocked this place doesn’t have a Michelin star yet.

Heading Home & Final Thoughts

We headed back to Miami happy, inspired, and already planning our return.

Things I Wish I Knew Before Visiting Cartagena:

  • Customs can take hours – be patient and plan accordingly
  • Uber is incredibly affordable and convenient
  • Make restaurant reservations early (especially Celele)
  • Plan island tours in advance during peak season

Cartagena is colorful, soulful, luxurious, and deeply cultural. It’s the kind of place that stays with you long after you leave – and one I’ll absolutely be returning to.
