Costa Rica – 5 Days in La Fortuna

Join me on a five-day adventure in La Fortuna, Costa Rica! This journey was a perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and cultural immersion. Nestled at the foot of the majestic Arenal Volcano, La Fortuna offers stunning landscapes, hot springs, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife. This holistic trip truly allowed me to immerse myself in the spirit of “pura vida.” Here’s a glimpse into my unforgettable experience in this tropical paradise and how I was deeply impressed by the nature, wildlife, and kind people of Costa Rica.

Day 1: Arrival in La Fortuna
Landing in San Jose (SJO), I felt the excitement building as I prepared for my journey to La Fortuna. I opted for a private shuttle, which was expensive at $200, but absolutely worth it since it was night, and I didn’t want to drive in a new country in the dark, especially during the rainy season. The scenic drive through Costa Rica’s lush countryside was mesmerizing. Along the way, I couldn’t resist stopping for some authentic Costa Rican food at a roadside eatery. The flavors were incredible, and I had the best plantains ever. After the flight, I was starving, and this meal was just what I needed.

Finally, I checked in to Arenal Manoa Hot Springs and Hotel, where I was greeted by stunning views of the Arenal Volcano and lush gardens. I couldn’t wait for the morning, to see how this place looks like in the daylight.

Day 2: Relaxation and Exploration
Waking up to an amazing breakfast with a volcano view was the perfect start to my morning. I spent the morning chilling by the pool, soaking in the hot springs, and enjoying the serene surroundings. The hotel’s natural setting provided plenty of opportunities for birdwatching and nature viewing.

In the afternoon, I picked up my rental car in Fortuna, giving me the freedom to explore at my own pace. Lunch at Pollo Fortuño was a treat; the chicken dishes were flavorful and satisfying. I spent the rest of the day shopping for souvenirs, trying local desserts and coffee, and immersing myself in the local culture. The day ended with a relaxed evening back at the hotel, enjoying the hot springs even with the consistent rain showers.

Day 3: Adventure and Wildlife
After a great breakfast at the hotel, where I saw alligators and a variety of birds, I embarked on a hike to the stunning Fortuna Waterfall. The hike was challenging, with 500 steps down and back up, but the sight of the waterfall was well worth the effort. The cool waters of the waterfall provided a refreshing break.

Next, I explored the Bogarin Trail with a knowledgeable guide, spotting sloths, poisonous frogs, a viper snake, and falcons. It was an incredible experience to see so much wildlife up close. A café by the trail offered classic Costa Rican coffee and empanadas, which were the perfect snacks after the hike.

Back at the hotel, I spent some time by the pool and in the hot springs before treating myself to a massage with a river view. The day ended with an amazing dinner at the hotel, featuring the finest local cuisine.

Day 4: Hanging Bridges and Jungle Coffee
After breakfast at the hotel, I spent the morning lounging by the pool and sunbathing. Then, I ventured out to the Mistico Hanging Bridges trails, where I walked among the treetops and enjoyed breathtaking views. Brunch at the Mistico Hanging Bridges restaurant included delicious avocado toast and fresh juices. Later, I visited Sloffee Coffee Shop in the jungle, where I enjoyed exceptional coffee surrounded by nature. Back at the hotel, I spotted a raccoon running by my room, adding a touch of wildlife to my stay. Dinner at the Rainforest Restaurant was a delightful experience, with exquisite dishes in a beautiful natural setting.

Day 5: Hiking and San Jose
I started my day with a hearty breakfast at the hotel before checking out and preparing for a day of adventure. The Arenal Volcano Red Hike was a 5 km trail that offered spectacular views and the opportunity to walk on ancient lava flows. Exploring the lava trails was fascinating, and I even saw monkeys during the hike, which added to the experience.

Lunch at Bogarin Coffee Shop was a highlight, featuring the best traditional Costa Rican coffee made with a cloth filter and delicious carrot cake. After lunch, I headed to San Jose, enjoying the scenic drive through the Costa Rican countryside. Dinner at Tenador Argentina Restaurant in San Jose was a perfect end to the day, with Argentine cuisine that had a Costa Rican twist.

Day 6: Departure
Rising early for my morning flight to LAX, I dropped off the rental car and took the shuttle to SJO. As I reflected on the incredible experiences of my trip, I felt a deep appreciation for the natural beauty and warm hospitality of Costa Rica. This journey was unforgettable, and I left with a heart full of memories and a spirit renewed by the wonders of La Fortuna.

Conclusion:
La Fortuna offers a perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and cultural experiences. From breathtaking hikes and wildlife encounters to delicious local cuisine and rejuvenating hot springs, this five-day adventure was everything I hoped for and more. As I returned home, I carried the spirit of Costa Rica with me, inspired by its natural beauty, abundant wildlife, and the kind people. This holistic trip truly immersed me in “pura vida,” and I can’t wait to return to explore more of this beautiful country.
