All You Need to Know Before Traveling to the USA from Serbia

Having navigated the journey from Serbia to the United States for the first time nearly a decade ago, I’ve encountered everything from visa application processes and rejections to travel challenges and various obstacles. To aid others embarking on this adventure, I’ve compiled a guide filled with insights and advice that I wish had been shared with me. While everyone’s experience may differ, this guide aims to help you navigate these challenges more efficiently.

Visa Application Process

  • DS Form: Essential for your application, the DS form can be filled out online. Ensure you follow the instructions carefully.
  • Photos: You’ll need both digital (PDF) and printed photos meeting the visa application requirements.
  • Interview Schedule: Booking your visa interview is a critical step. Prepare well in advance.
  • Visa Fee: Be aware of the current visa application fee and ensure you pay it according to the provided instructions.

Flight Tickets

  • Utilize Skyscanner, Expedia, and Google Flights to find the most affordable flight options. Consider:
    • Handicap Requests: If you anticipate difficulties with terminal changes or mobility, request assistance when booking.
    • Layovers: Opt for flights with the fewest layovers to simplify your journey.
    • Luggage Allowance: Check each airline’s policy. For example, Turkish Airlines allows two pieces of luggage, while Swiss Air may charge extra for checked bags.

Airport Transfer

Options include pickup by family/friend, shuttle services, buses, taxis, or car rentals. Note:

  • Car Rentals: Minimum age is usually 21, and an international license is required.

Accommodation

Consider staying with friends and family, or explore hotels, Airbnb, and hostels for your stay.

Cultural Shock

Be prepared for a cultural shock, from different measurement systems to the vast freeway networks. Everything will feel new and exciting.

Prices

  • Food and Restaurants: Generally, more expensive than in Serbia.
  • Clothing: Often cheaper, with a wider variety.
  • Taxes: Added on top of the item price and vary from state to state.

Going Out and Clubbing

  • The legal age for going out to clubs is 21, and “last call” times can vary by state.

Embrace Technology

  • The USA makes extensive use of QR codes at restaurants, Apple Pay, and credit cards. Services like Uber and Lyft are common for transportation, and electronic check-ins are standard.

Phone Adapters

  • Electrical outlets differ, so bring an adapter for your electronic devices.
