Tips for Stress-Free Flights and Travel

As someone who travels frequently between the USA and Europe and often takes long-haul flights, I’m going to share a few tips and tricks that help me have a smoother, less stressful trip and arrive at my destination with minimal jet lag.

Before we get into this article, I want to note that it will take time to fully embrace everything noted below and incorporate it. But just like anything else in life, it takes practice, and before you know it, it will turn into a travel routine.

Pack 2-3 Days in Advance: I am a planner and organizer, and I love to pack a few days in advance due to my busy schedule. I am not a procrastinator and dislike doing things at the last minute. For example, if I am flying on a Thursday, I try to start packing the weekend before when I have more time to relax and prepare my luggage. This approach allows me to see what else I need to buy for my travels and ensures I don’t forget anything important. Packing in advance also gives me peace of mind, knowing that everything is ready and I won’t have to rush on the day of my flight.

Plan Your Outfits: While I am packing, I like to try and plan my outfits for every day of my travel. It really helps me pack less than I used to in the past and also saves me from thinking when I arrive at my destination. When I’m jet-lagged and tired, I don’t want to waste my precious travel time thinking about what to wear and if I brought enough stuff. I also realized that it is better to bring less than more since you can always purchase new items at your destination. And of course, the weather can be unpredictable, so you might need to buy a jacket or warmer hoodie depending on where you travel.

Have Travel-Size Toiletries Ready: This tip has been life-changing for me. Having my toiletry bag ready with travel-size face wash, serums, moisturizers, toothpaste, toothbrush, hairbrush, and other necessary items saves a lot of space in my luggage. I always save items I get from hotels, flights, or as gifts with purchases from places like Macy’s or Sephora to restock my toiletry bag. This way, I’m always prepared for my next trip without taking up too much luggage space. Plus, having a pre-packed toiletry bag means I don’t have to worry about forgetting any essentials.

Check Destination Weather: Always check the weather before you book your travel. This step is crucial. For instance, you don’t want to go to Cancun or the Bahamas during hurricane season. Similarly, if you plan to go skiing in Switzerland, ensure there’s enough snow. Avoid traveling during unfavorable weather conditions to prevent wasting time, money, and resources. Checking the weather also helps you pack appropriately, ensuring you have the right clothing and gear for your trip.

Get Your Chargers Situated: Many countries have different electrical outlets, so double-check and bring appropriate plugs, which you can buy inexpensively on Amazon or eBay. This preparation ensures you can charge your devices without any hassle. It’s also a good idea to pack a portable charger to keep your devices powered during long flights or layovers.

Buy Necessary Supplements: I always have my melatonin ready, specifically Olly sleep gummies, which are my regular companions on long trips. They help me adjust my sleep cycle and reduce jet lag. I also take vitamin C, hydro packets, and digestive enzymes to help my body adjust to new environments, food, and water. These supplements keep my immune system strong and ensure I stay healthy and energized throughout my trip.

TSA/Clear: For USA travelers, having TSA PreCheck, Clear, or Global Entry can significantly reduce security and screening wait times, making the entire airport experience less stressful. If you check in online and have TSA/Clear, you can be at the airport lounge in less than 10 minutes after dropping off your luggage. This efficiency allows you to spend more time relaxing before your flight.

Lounge Access: Airport lounges elevate the travel experience. You can relax, enjoy a nice meal and drinks, and some lounges even offer massages, showers, and spa services. I’m a big fan of American Express Centurion lounges for their gourmet food and overall experience. Lounge access provides a peaceful environment away from the hustle and bustle of the main terminal, making your wait more enjoyable.

Upgrade Your Flight: Upgrading doesn’t apply to everyone, and sometimes it can be very expensive. I don’t usually pay for upgrades for domestic or short flights. However, for international and overnight flights, I find that the extra comfort is worth the cost. There are various ways to upgrade, including bidding, using miles, paying, or getting lucky with a free upgrade at check-in. It never hurts to ask! Upgrading can make a huge difference in your travel experience, providing more legroom, better meals, and overall comfort.

Bring Comfy Clothes for the Flight: Comfort is key for long-haul flights. Wear comfortable clothes to ensure you’re relaxed during the flight. I prefer wearing layers so I can adjust to the varying temperatures on the plane. Don’t forget to pack a cozy hoodie and a pair of warm socks to keep you comfortable during the flight.

Plan Your Activities: If you’re visiting a destination for a specific activity, make sure to check its availability before booking your trip. Ensure that the activity is open and not undergoing renovations or construction, and that no major circumstances will prevent you from doing it. For example, I once booked a trip to Peru to visit Machu Picchu, only to find out that all tour dates were booked during my travel dates. Fortunately, my flight and hotel were fully refundable, so I was able to cancel both. Planning activities in advance also helps you make the most of your trip and avoid disappointment.

Incorporating these tips into your travel routine will take time and practice, but it will significantly enhance your travel experience. By planning ahead and being prepared, you can enjoy a smoother, less stressful trip and arrive at your destination ready to explore.
